Fair Housing - 4 hours

Fair Housing is a course in which civil rights, the Fair Housing Act, the Housing and Community Development Act, and the Fair Housing Amendments Act are brought together to determine the importance of inclusive and nondiscriminatory real estate practices. Basing its content on laws and landmark court cases, Fair Housing gives an overview of the possible penalties for violating these laws in practice and advertising.

This course begins with a historical overview of fair housing laws and provides students with an in-depth analysis of discriminatory housing practices. The 1988 Fair Housing Amendments Act is presented in detail, with special emphasis on disability and familial status discrimination. The fundamentals of fair housing advertising are introduced, along with current case law. A section on enforcement and remedies discusses the substantial penalties for violating the act. Legal issues, including current case law, are presented as case studies to affirm the importance of these issues in real life situations.
