How to Become a NYC Real Estate Salesperson
Choosing a new career can be hard, luckily the steps needed to become a Real Estate Salesperson in NYC are pretty straightforward:
- Take the 75-hour Real Estate Licensing Course
- Pass the NY State Licensing Exam
- Find a Sponsoring Broker / Real Estate Firm to work for
- Apply for your New York Real Estate License with the NY Department of State (DOS)
Before you can get started, it’s important that all applicants meet certain requirements. For example, anyone thinking about getting their real estate license must be 18 or over.
The 75-hour Real Estate Licensing Course
Once you decide that real estate is your career calling, the first step to becoming a professional is getting your real estate license. In New York State, it is required by the DOS that everyone looking to obtain this license take the Real Estate Salesperson Licensing Course. It’s a 75-hour course that teaches you everything you need to know to pass the NY State Licensing Exam and get started on the path to real estate success.
Good to know: The 75-hour course is currently running at our schools in Brooklyn and Queens on a rotating schedule. It means you can register for classes today and start tomorrow. The unique schedule offered at our school allows you to finish in as little as 2 ½ weeks (if you take 3 sessions a day, everyday) or take up to 3 months. Check out an example of our student Brooklyn schedule to get a better idea.
Finding a Sponsoring Broker
While taking classes to learn the ins and outs about your future career, it’s important to take some time to consider where you’d ultimately like to work once licensed. Things like agency culture, policies, and commission structure are important considerations that should factor into your decision.
Finding a sponsoring broker is also required by the State before submitting your licensing application to the Department of State. Our school offers Job Placement resources for our students to help match them with a sponsoring broker and real estate firm that suits them.
Apply for your New York Real Estate License
The last step in getting licensed is submitting a paper application to the Department of State, the office that issues licenses for the State of New York. Along with your application, you’ll want to include your salesperson course certification, valid ID, and $55 application fee.
